First, there is simplicity.

Over billions of years, that simplicity becomes slightly more complex.

Complexity is accelerated by dependency.

That complexity can only persist because it gives enough time for the environment to support it - for it’s dependencies to persist. This is a delicate balance.

All complexities are not the same. The Earth has evolved to deal with much of it. However, some complexities - the ones we create - are very difficult to undo.

When that complexity far exceeds what the environment is capable of handling, it makes me sad.

Because that means one of two things:

  • we must find some way of balancing this complexity
  • the scale must tip, the environment must adapt

This may not be inherently bad, but the future of life becomes a greater uncertainty.
